 Reception
Maths Explorers
Over this academic year, the children have gone on a fun-filled journey of mathematical exploration. They have been on shape trails and number hunts in the woods and found repeating patterns using natural resources. Smoothie cafes and mini waterparks have been created so pupils could learn about capacity and volume while baking sessions have also developed their knowledge of measure. Construction areas, inside and outside, have meant the children can saw wood to size to make objects they have designed such as bird boxes and geo boards. The children’s confidence has grown and with it their love of maths. Here they explain some of their favourite activities ...
“I started with one whole chapatti, then I cut it in half, now I have two equal bits of chapatti and I can share it with my friend!” Ellen L
“We made cookies and measured with tablespoons,
it was super delicious!” Barnaby B
“We are recycling the water into the water butt,” says Wren C-A. “This is so tricky. Water only can go down it won’t go up. We need to hold the hose up high my end. I can do that because I am the tallest. The water can go down the hose now, look! It’s filling up
the big container.”
Savannah C
“We use the Numicon to make our numbers to 20. We do it because we can use the blue 10 then add a different colour. We can count the holes to find the new number, but I can count on from 10 because I know the blue one is 10.” Naila C

“We went on a number hunt, it was the most fun time of my life!” Joseph McC
“We had to make a giant alien footprint and we had to make it big enough for us to fit in. Then we had to estimate how many aliens
would fit in the footprint.”
