Prep School SportParticipation through to Sports Excellence

Our beautiful, extensive and well-equipped sports facilities include a wonderful indoor/outdoor swimming pool, all-weather playing surface, netball courts, hall, dance studio and a cricket pavilion. We feel that games are an integral part of prep school life and all our pupils will have an opportunity to play in a School or House team.

We regularly field teams in the traditional sport of football, rugby, hockey, netball, swimming, cricket, and rounders and our fabulous equestrian team go from strength to strength. Of course, playing for your school or your house is more than just about performance on the field; our pupils take considerable pride in being part of a sports team, whether they are in a senior first team or playing a competitive sport for the first time in Year 3.

Being part of a team encourages comradeship and good manners. Our children know that they are expected to behave impeccably when involved in intra or inter-school matches, being generous in victory and stoical in defeat. These qualities hold them in good stead when they go onto play at County or National level in their chosen sport, as many of our children do.

Our pupils also take part in other team or individual sports, either as part of our extensive extra-curricular programme or on an independent basis, and regularly achieve national standards in golf, sailing, athletics and even go-carting.

Our senior boys and girls have the opportunity to take part in an overseas sports tour. Whilst touring, our pupils learn how to contribute, compete, to physically challenge themselves against determined opposition; to experience highs and lows, disappointments and achievements – all within a safe and supportive environment.

We have great sports teachers and a variety of sports and activities to take part in – there’s something for everyone! Past pupil

Athletics

Children are taught all major track and field disciplines throughout their time at Heath Mount.

In the reception years, the focus of lessons is on developing core running, throwing and jumping confidence through fun multi-skills activities. Here, the building blocks for performance, as well as fundamental sporting attributes such as coordination, balance, and agility, form the foundation for lessons.

As the children progress through the school years, an emphasis is placed on acquiring the correct technical knowledge and body awareness to perform to their full physical potential. Whether in the jumps pit, on the sprint straight or with a javelin in hand, children have the opportunity showcase what they have learned at one of the local athletics meets or during the fiercely competed Sports Day the end of the school year.

Football

Football, more important than life or death?football

Perhaps this is a trifle excessive, but the game is a great tool for learning valuable life lessons including sportsmanship, teamwork, skill, and commitment.

We enjoy excellent football facilities with 7 pitches and often field up to 15 teams to give all of the boys an opportunity to represent their school. The boys start playing football in Pre-Prep and build up to the 11-a-side game in the Prep School.

The popularity of ‘the beautiful game’ is apparent; in addition to playing during PE and Games during the Michaelmas Term, come rain or shine there will always be a clutch of players honing their skills on the pitches in front of the school at break and lunchtime.

Rugby

Rugby has been called the ultimate team game, and at Heath Mount, we create a safe environment for the boys to enjoy its’ benefits.

rugby Prep School Sports

We play rugby in the Lent term and enjoy excellent rugby facilities with 4 pitches and often field up to 15 teams to give all of the boys an opportunity to represent their school.

All of the boys have the opportunity to enjoy playing rugby to their own level and ability and to experience the fun of match play, in a safe environment. Our boys learn great sportsmanship, teamwork, skill, commitment, and courage and quickly appreciate that every player has a vital role to play in the performance of his team. Under the care of our experienced teachers, boys start with tag rugby in Pre-Prep and build up to the 15 a side game in their senior years.

We play a good number of fixtures and tournaments for each year group, both locally and nationally, as well as an inter–house competition. Towards the end of the term, our attention moves to the fast and very exciting 7 a side game.  Again, we compete in local competitions and have enjoyed great success in recent years. We have are proud of our close links with the Premiership team Saracens and as a Saracens Partnership School benefit from regular workshops with some of their top players – a real fillip for the boys.

Our senior pupils have the opportunity to join a joint Rugby and Netball overseas tour. These tours prove very popular and give the pupils the opportunity to contribute to and play a part in a larger team. Rounders

Girls’ Games at Heath Mount offer participation, development, and enjoyment.

rounders Prep School Sports

All girls at Heath Mount are encouraged to participate in sport, pursuing excellence where appropriate, personal development and above all an enduring enjoyment for sport.

Rounders is our girls major summer sport at Heath Mount. The essential sporting skills of throwing, catching and striking are introduced gradually from Year 1.

By encouraging enjoyment and the importance of teamwork, the girls progress and enjoy notable success. Strength, agility, and speed are developed as the girls work their way through the school.

From Year 3, all the girls will be given the opportunity to represent the school in competitive matches. In addition to weekly fixtures, we enter local tournaments and have won a number of these in recent years.

The summer weather gives all the children a chance to enjoy our beautiful grounds whilst developing important sporting skills.

Netball

Netball is one of our major winter sports at Heath Mount, with coaching being introduced in Year 1.

Netball Prep School Sports

As the girls move through the school, skills and techniques are taught in year groups. All the girls are taught by well qualified, enthusiastic members of staff. Whilst emphasising enjoyment, the fixture list is extensive to allow all girls the opportunity to represent the school.

In addition to weekly fixtures, we enter local and national tournaments and enjoy success at both levels. We also host tournaments, where up to twelve schools enjoy our hospitality. At these events we expect our girls to show good sportsmanship and our senior girls are encouraged to help umpire where time allows. A number of girls have been selected for the county training programme and by fostering an enjoyment of netball go on to represent clubs and their senior schools at a high level. At the end of the term, our highly competitive house matches are held, where the girls can showcase their netball skills.

Swimming

Swimming is a sport for all and a key part of the curriculum at Heath Mount.

swimming Prep School Sport

We aim to give each child both the confidence and enthusiasm to enjoy swimming throughout their time at school and in later life. Every child, from Reception to Year 8, has the opportunity to swim each week in our covered pool.
All lessons are taught in ability sets which allow each child to participate at their level and fulfil their potential. Our swimming teachers are fully qualified swimming specialists.

Pre-Prep Swimming

Learning to swim is an essential part of life in the pre-prep. The children start with learning fundamental water skills through play. As they progress through the pre-prep, they develop the basic water skills necessary for stroke development.

Prep School Swimming

Every child has the opportunity to swim each week in our covered pool. All lessons are taught by specialist swimming teachers in ability sets, this allows each child to participate at their level and to fulfil their potential.

The Heath Mount swimming programme concentrates on teaching fundamental water skills, stroke development, water safety and preparation for competition. The use of fun and innovative equipment ensures no 2 lessons are the same. The swimmers may find themselves balancing cups of water on their heads or swimming with bouncy balls in their hands – all practices used to reinforce sound technique.

swimming Prep School Sports

Heath Mount swimmers achieve great success in both regional and national competitions, we have had IAPS National finalists in each of the last 4 years and have placed in the top 3 regularly. We also take pride in running “fun galas” for all the younger children to introduce them to competitive swimming and the exciting atmosphere of a swimming gala.

Our boys and girls swimming teams in years 3 to 8 compete in a varied fixture list against both local schools and in representative competitions.

There are also lunchtime swimming clubs for those who are keen to swim in galas. The annual inter-house swimming gala gives every child in the Prep School an opportunity to compete and win points for their house.

We aim to equip all leavers with both the ability to enjoy the health benefits of swimming throughout their lives, and to be safe in and around open water.

lacrosse Prep School Sports

POP Lacrosse is a non-contact version of Lacrosse which we introduce in the

Prep School to give the girls a first taste of the sport. We have been known to play in the snow, as long as the balls are not white! Whilst the school does not yet play competitively, the girls are quickly able to learn the techniques and thoroughly enjoy attempting throwing and catching with a plastic stick.

A number of hockey and netball skills are transferable and the girls enjoy the challenge of a new sport. On leaving Heath Mount, those girls whose senior schools play Lacrosse can join in confidently; many go on to develop their technique with the best playing for their schools.

Badminton

Badminton is taught at Heath Mount from Year 3 through to Year 8.

Pupils are also encouraged to enter local competitions.

Cross Country

Heath Mount pupils are fortunate to be able to use the beautiful grounds for cross country runs.  Cross Country Prep School

A cross-country club runs at lunchtimes throughout the Michaelmas and Lent terms.  The cross-country programme culminates in the Inter-House competition, run at the end of the Lent term.

This popular event is run by pupils from Year 3 to Year 8; in-turn they support the Pre-Prep pupils from reception to Year 2 when they join in the competition with a mini-cross country race.

Tennis

The astro surface accommodates 6 tennis courts and pupils are taught tennis skills in the Summer term. Tennis Prep School

Tennis skills are introduced to pupils in Pre-Prep and tennis is taught routinely from Year 3 onwards. Pupils are encouraged to practice during their spare time as equipment is always available and the astro courts remain open throughout the school day.

Friendly fixtures are arranged with other local schools and several pupils play tennis at county level.

Cricket

Cricket is the major summer games sport for boys in the prep school at Heath Mount.

cricket Prep School Sports

However, all children get the opportunity to develop basic striking and fielding cricket skills during PE lessons starting in Reception to Year 2. As the boys move through the prep school, Games lessons focus on developing technique, strategy and the more technical aspects of cricket.

The three indoor nets (with bowling machine facilities), four outdoor nets, three grass wickets, one astroturf pitch and a charming pavilion with electronic scoreboard provide an inspirational backdrop for all children to develop and succeed. As well as regular extra-curricular training sessions, the cricket fixtures programme is packed with 1XI to U9E teams competing in regular matches, county cup fixtures, and inter-house games. Senior pupils undertake overseas cricket tours and pupils can frequently be found practising their skills during break and lunch times.
