Nursery School & Reception

Children are welcomed into our new state of the art Nursery School in Hertfordshire from the September after they are 3.

From the very start, we encourage them to be investigators and make the most of the beautiful bright indoor and outdoor space.

During this first year, we encourage a ‘finding out approach’ and the environment and routine encourage children to develop their independence, as they make decisions and choices when playing and learning. Whether they are singing in French, or drumming along to a tune as part of a music lesson, we aim to nurture their natural curiosity and spark their desire to learn.

They particularly enjoy their timetabled visits to Stumble Trip Wood within our Nursery School grounds in beautiful Hertford, where they learn about the natural world with our own Forest Ranger.

The transition from Nursery School to Reception sees a more formal timetable being introduced, though again the emphasis is on learning through fun, play-based activities. The children are taught, in the main, in small groups of 7 or 8 and may improve their counting skills by adding up pine cones in the Forest, or refine their phonics in the Library.

Like every other year group in pre-prep, reception children journey out once a term to local museums, farms and even the zoo, to consolidate what they are learning in class. They also receive regular visits from theatre groups and the like, to stimulate their imagination and excite their interest.

Contact us today to arrange a time for you to come and visit our school by calling 01920 830 230 or by emailing registrar@heathmount.org.

Sophie’s Day

My name is Sophie and this is what I do at my Nursery School.

When I arrive at Nursery School, I choose a book to put in my book bag. I like sharing this book with my family when I go home. I then look for my name card and post it in the big red post box in the classroom.

When I have put my book bag away I sit at a table with a teacher to practise my handwriting. When I have finished, I can choose to play with other toys or activities. We have circle time in our classrooms and we sing a good morning song to welcome everyone to school. We do counting and phonics and talk about the weather and the days of the week.

After circle time we go to play outside or inside. We can choose where we play and the teachers call us to have a go at lots of different activities. I love sliding down the giant slides, especially because I can slide down next to my friends.

We have Music or French with different teachers every week and we also go to Stumble Trip Wood and see our Forest Ranger! We always have an adventure, finding out about leaves and trees and the animals in the wood. We have had a real fire before and we are very good at being safe and looking after ourselves.

Lunch is always yummy especially because all our meals are home made. I love fish and chips on a Friday and red jelly is very tasty. We sit with our teachers and dinner ladies and I like talking to my friends.

After lunch we do different things every day. Sometimes we do puzzles sometimes we use the interactive whiteboard. My best day is Friday because it is Show and Tell. I get to take a toy in to show to my friends!

Sometimes I go home after lunch and sometimes I stay and have more fun at my Nursery School!
