 Learning in Lockdown
2 13
The weekly Griffin newsletter was adapted to become a platform for sharing and celebrating the achievements
of remote learning, full of positive stories and images, including some incredible artwork. Our Year 8 scholars formed a journalism club and contributed a host of interesting features for their peers, covering topics from VE Day and Captain Tom to World Environment Day. They also wrote an exclusive sport report and were lucky enough to interview a number of elite athletes and sports stars including Jo Tripp, Kelly Brown and Harry Toffolo (see page 119). They even enjoyed a unique Zoom session with the GB Paralympic Association.

Nursery children made animal headbands for a virtual zoo trip with their teachers. After
a rousing rendition of “We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo” they visited zoos in San Diego, Dublin and Edinburgh and saw elephants, meerkats and giraffes. The Cherry class even saw a duck-billed platypus!
Year 1 learned about the seaside in Victorian times and made their own Punch and Judy puppet shows.
Reception classes went on a virtual Spacewalk to find out about the planets. Everyone prepared for their galactic space mission by dressing up in some stellar outfits, including Miss Larroude!
The children also drew some superhero bears to thank the NHS workers and to brighten up the children’s wards at the Lister Hospital.
May the Fourth Be with You: Pupils celebrated Star Wars Day with a special themed Podcast
Year 2 studied the Pyramids and how they were constructed as part of their Egyptian topic. They looked at images of the Pyramids from Google Earth and Mrs Couldridge challenged them to build a ‘step pyramid’ from Lego or bricks taller than 6.5cm.
Pupils in Year 2, 3 and 4 performed in class concerts during their curriculum music lessons. They had made fantastic progress on their instruments despite the lockdown, taking advantage of continuing tuition online.

featuring some of Heath Mount’s most avid Sci-fi fans! In Mr Naylor’s PE lessons, the children were asked to channel ‘the force’ as they were put through a gruelling Jedi Boot camp consisting of Lightsabre lunging, Hyperspace jumping, X-Wing star jumps, Vader marching and C3PO dancing.
