Trip to India - Girls in saris on beach

Dear Parents,

Musical participation has always been a key part of the Heath Mount educational ethos and this week I am delighted to share news of not one but three final places in national competitions for our prestigious Bax Choir. Our top choristers have been shortlisted to perform as one of the final eight choirs in the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition at the Royal Festival Hall on 4th March – tickets can now be bought online (www.southbankcentre.co.uk). Following this (on the Friday of the same week!), they will then travel to Bolton to perform as one of the last five choirs selected to take part in the televised BBC Young Choir of the Year competition (to be broadcast later in the year). The choir will then be allowed a few month’s rest (!) before travelling to the Llangollen International Choral Festival at the beginning of July to compete as one of the six semi-finalists in this international competition. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms White and all of the Bax Choristers for these outstanding achievements. Music plays an integral role in a child’s development and choral participation allows children to learn about music through mastery of their own unique instrument – their voice.

As a result of these choral performances, we have made the decision to move the Year 6 & 7 play to the second half of the Summer term (week commencing 10th June) to allow the children sufficient rehearsal time before their opening night and also sufficient revision time before their end of year exams (which take place before the May half-term).

Our excellent Drama Department will still provide a wealth of theatrical spectacle with the Year 5 ‘Play in a Day’ which will take place on Friday 15th March at 6.30pm.

I would like to put on record my thanks to the team of teachers and pupils who returned from India at the start of the week after another successful visit to Loyola School in Manvi. Our intrepid explorers have reported separately about their visit, but I am delighted that they took the time to deliver our pupils’ handwritten notes in addition to a significant donation made by parents, pupils and friends in the form of a new school bus.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful du Maurier Parents’ Association team who have worked tirelessly to put on events and activities for the school community over the last year. This year they gifted approximately £27,000 for the Pre-Prep playground equipment, £10,000 for a future low-ropes course for the Prep School, £9,500 for 40 tablets to be shared between the Pre-Prep and the Lower School. This is in addition to their very generous gifts from last year. We are hugely grateful for these special items which will undoubtedly enhance the education and recreation time for our pupils. The team are now kindly raising money for a new minibus! The team are always eager to welcome new recruits for this invaluable work. If you are interested in joining, please email Mrs Emma Heuvels via the School Office.
