‘We are all better than we know. If only we can be brought to realise this, we may never again be prepared to settle for anything less.’Kurt Hahn
At Heath Mount we believe that ‘education’ encompasses far more than academic learning. We aim to develop the whole person through exposing all of our pupils to as wide a range of experiences and opportunities as possible. In line with this ethos we have developed a Leadership and Personal Development Programme and Award Scheme for our Year 7 and 8 pupils which pulls the various learning experiences together and provides a vehicle through which pupils’ development can be measured and their efforts recognised and rewarded.
The programme is broken down into three main strands; Outdoor Education and Leadership Training; Service to the Community; and Personal Skill Development. Progress in each of these areas is assessed against the attainment of specific skills as well as a points system, which leads to the achievement of a Bronze, Silver or Gold award. A key feature of the scheme is each pupil’s full involvement, with their tutor, in the process of assessing their performance and in setting their personal targets for development. Alongside these three core strands we also run a programme of ‘life skills’ which are important to our pupils’ personal development but which are not assessed as part of the Award Scheme.
The programme is designed to encourage every pupil to play an active role in their community, to foster accountability and responsibility, to develop initiative, leadership skills and teamwork and to build self-confidence and self-belief. In addition the programme provides invaluable life training in challenging pupils to self-assess their characters and skills set in order to know and build on their strengths whilst recognising and working within their limitations.
