A memorable evening of music with Pam Rhodes and Susan Parkes in aid of our Zambia charity projects.
Last Friday, we hosted A Choral Spectacular at Letchworth Free Church, featuring our talented Bax Choir and Middle School Choir and hosted by legendary BBC presenter Pam Rhodes.
The concert opened with Bax Choir’s energetic performance of Beat of a Different Drum, setting the tone for a remarkable evening. Our Director of Music, Mr Fisher, then warmly welcomed over 350 parents, families and the wider community to Letchworth Free Church as he highlighted the vital role of choral singing in building community and bringing people together through music.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Letchworth Community Voices, an inclusive community choir, who performed three uplifting pieces: This Train, You Raise Me Up (featuring Mrs Hembrough on violin), and Rhythm of Life. Their contribution beautifully reflected the inclusive and communal spirit of the evening.
Mr Fisher also welcomed our special guest, Susan Parkes, a renowned soprano, who captivated the audience with a stunning selection from the operatic repertoire. Her programme included La Danza by Rossini, Habanera from Carmen, Vissi d’arte, and the much‑loved Summertime by Gershwin. The Habanera proved a particular highlight, as Susan playfully involved the audience before ultimately selecting Mr Gillam to receive the rose, to much amusement and applause.
Our Middle School Choir delighted everyone with their vibrant performance of Lemonade, showcasing confidence, energy, and excellent ensemble singing.
The evening was expertly guided by our special compère, Pam Rhodes, whose entertaining and amusing stories filled the transitions between performances. We are extremely grateful to Pam for her warmth, humour, and generosity throughout the concert.
Bax Choir returned to the stage with a powerful performance of Bring Me a Little Water, Sylvie, complete with body percussion, before concluding their set with the inspiring and feel‑good Feel Good.
Heartfelt thanks were then offered by our Orchestra and Choir Captain to our special guests, before the evening concluded with a united Heath Mount Choir performing Goin’ Up a Yonder and Why We Sing—a fitting and moving finale.
This was a charity evening, and Mr Gillam delivered an informative and moving speech highlighting our support of Namoomba School and Msukwe Bush Clinic in Zambia as well as the important work being undertaken by NGO Twende Education for All, supporting the education of children undergoing long‑term hospital treatment for cancer and sickle cell anaemia in Lusaka. We were proud to have raised £2,000 to help provide resources, fund teachers and work towards funding solar power to the school and clinic.
This truly was an impressive and spectacular evening, full of community spirit, professionalism, and outstanding musicianship. We are immensely proud of all our choir members and everyone involved in making Heath Mount shine in this significant and meaningful concert.
